RAF LINTON-ON-OUSE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR

5th November 2010

Friday, November 5th at 7:30pm., and Alan Mawby will be presenting an illustrated talk on the involvement of RAF Linton-On-Ouse in the last war and a history of what and who were at the base and the sorties they dangerously flew.

Tickets are available now from the Galtres box office, telephone 01347 822472, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with credit cards accepted, and are £8 for adults and children £5.

Alan Mawby is in charge of the memorial room at Linton and has a wealth of knowledge and data about the events, indeed he has supplied some information that was requested in last week's "Advertiser", namely the two local crashes.

The crash at Yearsley on December 16th/'43 involved an aircraft from the Canadian squadron based at Linton and  was a Lancaster bomber mark three on a sortie to Berlin, leaving at 16:30 hours and returning at 23:45 when the crash occurred.

The crew consisted of five Canadians and two British, with the rear gunner surviving, the rest all buried in the war cemetery at Stonefall, Harrogate.

A massive Halifax Bomber landing at Tholthorpe Airfield during the WarThe other crash involved a Halifax mark three bomber at Crayke from RAF Tholthorpe on a training sortie with 425 squadron taking off at 20:00 hours and lost power on the starboard outer engine.

The memorial room at RAF Linton will be open to visitors this summer.

Alan's power point presentation on November 5th will be a fascinating insight into the history of Linton and its involvement with the Second World War.
