NEWS FROM LEWIS & COOPER, Northallerton

Fine wine retailer toasts latest awards success

A WINE and fine food business is celebrating its latest award success with a week-long celebration of sherry.

Lewis & Cooper’s multi award-winning Wine Department was shortlisted for a prestigious International Wine Challenge award in its inaugural category for Fortified Wine Specialist of the Year.

In the event, the North Yorkshire firm was pipped at the post for the gong, announced earlier this month at a gala dinner in London, but that has not stopped it preparing a series of events to celebrate good sherry, starting from Monday [SEPT 20], at its flagship Northallerton store.

A sell-out sherry and tapas evening is held on Wednesday [22] evening, with a tasting tutored by Edward Butler, director of sherry bodega Williams and Humbert, in Jerez, Spain.

A special tapas menu is on offer in the store’s tearooms during the week.

Meanwhile, any sherry purchases made during the week at either the Northallerton or Yarm stores will be discounted by 10pc.

Finally, while Lewis & Cooper wine consultant Danny Cameron has managed to secure the entire UK allocation of a Barbadillo’s legendary En Rama Manzanilla sherry at a very special price.

“We may have narrowly missed out on the specialist IWC award earlier this month, but we’re still very proud of our fantastic range of sherry, port and more,” said Mr Cameron.

“We’ll continue to uphold our high standards of good quality service and independent buying power to get the best for our customers, whatever their tipple.”

Lewis & Cooper is the UK’s only independent to have carried off awards at all three of the country’s most prestigious wine competitions. Last year it was named North-East England Regional Merchant of the Year by the IWC. In 2007, it won the Independent Wine Retailer of the Year Award in the Drinks Business Awards. And a year earlier, the family-run firm clinched the Off Licence News Independent Wine Retailer award.

It's a fact

Like many local villages, Easingwold grew out of two completely separate settlements, one Viking and one of Saxon origin, located to the north and south of a common market square.
